The main objective of this course is to provide you with the information you need to contribute to hazardous materials transportation safety. By the time the course is over, you should be able to recognize and identify hazardous materials; understand shipment markings, labels, placards, documentation, and package requirements; load and unload hazardous materials safely; use personal protective equipment (PPE) and procedures; avoid accidents with hazardous materials; respond effectively to emergencies; and recognize and respond to security threats.
Why “Transporting Hazardous Materials Safely” Matters:
The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) through its hazardous material regulations (49 CFR 171-180), specifies requirements for the safe transportation of hazardous materials in commerce by rail, aircraft, vessel, and motor vehicle. The DOT has general requirements for the loading, unloading, handling, and storage of hazardous materials during their transportation.
DOT regulations require us to train you to perform your job safely and to help ensure the safe transportation of hazardous materials.
The main objective of this session is to help your drivers:
- Recognize and identify hazardous materials.
- Understand shipment markings, labels, placards, documentation, and package requirements.
- Load and unload hazardous materials safely.
- Use personal protective equipment, or PPE, and procedures.
- Avoid accidents with hazardous material shipments.
