OSHA’s Lockout Tagout Standard

Course Description:

OSHA’s Lockout Tagout Standard requires you to provide a program that includes energy control procedures, employee training, and periodic inspections to prevent accidents during servicing and/or maintenance operations on energized equipment.

Course Duration: 17 minutes

Why “OSHA’s Lockout Tagout Standard” Matters:

The lockout/tagout rules are designed to prevent accidents during servicing and/or maintenance operations on machines and equipment in which the unexpected energization or start-up of the machines or equipment, or release of stored energy, could cause injury to employees.

The regulation calls for the control of energy isolating devices by attaching locks (lockout) that prevent the machine from being operated or tags (tagout) that warn people not to start up the machines.

Key Points:

You must have a written lockout/tagout program;

  • Employees must be trained to recognize hazards and perform responsibilities safely;
  • Employees must comply with the lockout/tagout procedures required by the OSHA standard; and
  • You must conduct inspections of your lockout/tagout program at least annually to ensure compliance with OSHA requirements.
